Berri gets back to winning ways in tennis

AFTER suffering a first loss of the season the previous week against Cobdogla, Berri’s division one tennis side returned to form with a four-rubber victory over Renmark on Saturday afternoon.

Played at Berri in overcast conditions, the home side got away to a strong start after winning three of the opening four doubles.

Callan Maczkowiack and Cooper Staehr combined well, as did Paul Reid and Maria Tzanavaras, but Maczkowiack’s partnership with Reid was the only stumbling block.

Continuing a fine season for Renmark, David Strongman kept his side in the game, combining alongside Cody Cornelius for an early doubles win, as well as defeating Maczkowiack in the singles.

Abbas Qambari also tried hard for Renmark, winning his singles match against Reid, but wins to Staehr and Tzanavaras helped the hosts over the line.

Berri made sure of the result by winning the last two doubles matches of the game to confirm the victory through Maczkowiack and Tzanvaras defeating Strongman and Qambari, plus Reid and Staehr defeating Cornelius and Jackson McGuire.

The result sees Berri back in top spot alongside Cobdogla, although it sits in second position, while Renmark remains winless after six matches.

Cobdogla were made to work hard against a gallant Loxton outfit, eventually winning out six rubbers to four.

Travelling to Loxton, Cobdogla leaned on the efforts of superstar Sam Butterworth, and Cohen Battams to make sure of the result in a close contest.

Battams and Butterworth combined for two wins in the early doubles, but things were left level after Cooper Kruger worked with Rhys Loxton and Brooke Reichelt to drag the hosts back into it.

The Cobdogla stars also won both of their singles matches, but Kruger and Loxton failed to give in, again levelling things up going into the final round of doubles.

Sophie Nettle took the opportunity to combine alongside Battams first, and then Butterworth in the last two doubles matches, helping see Cobdogla across the line.

Although it failed to walk away with the victory, and has won just one match this season in the top division, Loxton continues to be on the improve, and will hope to enter the last three matches of the calendar year in that form.
