WAIKERIE emergency services were kept busy over the weekend with a house fire and car rollover incidents in the area.
A car rolled on Devlins Pound Road, Devlins Pound, on Friday, May 15 just before 4pm, when the driver took a corner too fast and lost control.
Waikerie Country Fire Service (CFS) captain Shaun Arnold said the driver was taken to hospital for observation.
“Apparently, the sun got in (the driver’s) eyes at the wrong time, making them misjudge a corner and hit the dirt wrong,” he said.
“The driver was taken to hospital for a check-up.”
Meanwhile, Waikerie CFS personnel were called to a house on Henderson Street, Waikerie, on Saturday, May 16 just before 10pm following reports of a structure fire.
Mr Arnold said a mattress placed near the open fireplace had caught alight.
“One person was sleeping on the mattress when the incident occurred,” he said.
“They were checked by ambulance officers on arrival but were unharmed.
“The building itself was a stone cottage and suffered no structure damage, apart from some smoke damage.
“The house occupants had extinguished the fire by the time (CFS personnel) arrived so we vented the smoke from the house and made sure there were no hot spots.”
Mr Arnold cautioned residents to remain vigilant when lighting fires inside.
“The person sleeping on the mattress was very lucky not to be injured,” he said.
“Anything flammable should be kept away from open fireplaces, and the fireplaces themselves need to be watched at all times when burning.”
