Barker Christmas wishes

AS the year comes to a close, I’d like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

At this time of year, it is important that we reflect on the true meaning of the season and the values it represents for so many Australians. For Christians, Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ – a reminder of hope, compassion and the light that guides us through difficult times.

But regardless of faith, the spirit of generosity, gratitude and togetherness remains central to how we celebrate and support one another at this time of year.
Christmas is also a period of increased travel as families reunite across our state and nation. I urge everyone to take extra care on the roads.

Plan your journeys, avoid driving while fatigued and remain patient in heavier traffic. Too many lives are lost on our roads each year, and every one of them is preventable. Let’s do everything we can to ensure all families have the chance to celebrate safely.

As we gather with loved ones, it’s important to remember those who serve our community during the festive season.

Our Defence Force personnel, police, paramedics, CFS, MFS and other first responders continue to protect and support us while many of us take a well-earned break. Their dedication deserves our thanks.

Finally, amid the celebrations, I encourage our community to look out for those who may be experiencing loneliness or hardship. Many families are feeling significant strain from rising grocery prices, higher energy costs, housing stress and other cost of living pressures.

I encourage all who can, to look out for friends and neighbours who may be struggling, support local charities, and remember that generosity isn’t always financial - often, understanding and community spirit matter just as much.

A check-in, a shared meal or a simple act of kindness can make a world of difference.
I wish everyone a safe, peaceful and meaningful Christmas season.
