Anaconda 2025 movie review

BACK in the 1990s, thrillers and action movies were commonplace.
In 1997, a film came along with a hit cast that now has received cult status, Anaconda.

It was a tight package that exploited the usual 1990s action movie tropes and made people horribly afraid of snakes, especially huge man-eating ones.

Then in 2025, almost 30 years later, another good cast assembled for a self-proclaimed “Meta reboot” of the original, including on-screen childhood friends Paul Rudd (Griff), and Jack Black (Doug), who take a film crew down to South America.

This time around a comedy, Anaconda starts off silly and irreverent – like many comedies of the early 2000s – but evolves (or dissolves) into something more honest and hell-bent on convincing the audience that it has a message.

In reality, this just causes the laughs to die down and the doorway for big-budget action explosions and special effects to take over.

A dull subplot involving the film-crew’s ship’s captain provides almost nothing in the way of a filler in the story, plus a lot of the themes of the Meta-ness of the main character’s story with probably go over a lot of peoples’ heads and fall flat.

On the bright side, the 2025 version of Anaconda, main actors Rudd, Black and Zahn do draw a few laughs, if misguided at times.

The addition of a CGI snake for the Meta-reboot helps the suspense of the little-seen beast.

In conclusion, despite a few drawbacks, Anaconda (2025) was probably partly ruined by oversaturation of trailers and spoilers before release for its comic effect.

xIf you are wanting an easy night out at the cinema/theatre for a summer holiday popcorn release that will in the end entertain, this is a great option. Just turn your brain off and put up your feet.
