Loxton shaped by Prussian Lutherans
LOXTON is a beautiful town and every time my husband, Angelo, a Loxton boy, and I visit, we are impressed by how well it continues to be presented.

The plantings on the roundabout provide a wonderful welcome to visitors travelling from Adelaide – and in our case, from Hahndorf.
Last year I launched a documentary titled Hahndorf: Echoes of the Past, telling the story of the Prussian Lutherans who fled their homeland seeking freedom in South Australia in 1838.
The documentary was filmed entirely in Hahndorf and includes many descendants of those original immigrants who still live in the village today.
It’s the story of the settlement of the colony, the Paradise of Dissenters focusing on the very brave and courageous immigration of these people.
South Australian history enthusiast Keith Conlon also appears as a guest presenter.
Many readers would know him through his long involvement in television and radio and his passion for preserving our state’s stories.
Having lived in rural and remote communities ourselves, we always appreciated when cultural events, films and performances were brought to our region.
So, for South Australia’s History Month this year, I wanted to provide the opportunity for Riverland residents to experience this important story locally.
Both Tanunda and Loxton were shaped significantly by Prussian Lutheran settlers of German heritage, whose contribution helped form the identity of these communities.
The Loxton screening of Echoes of the Past will be held in the Reflections Room at the Loxton Hotel on Sunday, May 24, from 2pm to 4pm.
The afternoon includes the documentary screening, afternoon tea, and a display and short discussion, on traditional German building techniques.
To make the event financially viable, a minimum of 30 bookings is required. I would therefore encourage interested readers to book now so this event can proceed in the Riverland community.
Numbers need to be secured by May 20 and bookings can be made at: https://bit.ly/42tG3ax
Payment can also be made at the door on the day, however advance bookings are required to confirm numbers (for inquiries call me on 0477 288 011).
