BOOKMAKERS consider Chaffey MP Tim Whetstone a near-certainty to be returned to office at tomorrow’s State Election – but the picture for his SA Liberal Party seems much grimmer.
Sportsbet has Mr Whetstone at the prohibitive odds of $1.02 to earn a fourth term. Adelaide-based Labor candidate Jo Sutton – all-but invisible to Chaffey voters during the entire campaign – is at $11, just ahead of Greens candidate, Trevor Schloithe and Nationals contender Damien Buijs, both at $15.
One Nation candidate Sab Feleppa is quoted as a $51 outsider, however, speaking on The Murray Pioneer’s Chase for Chaffey online webshow today, Mr Feleppa declared he felt he had a realistic chance of winning.
While Mr Whetstone is set for a successful election day, his current boss Steven Marshall is unlikely to be premier by Monday morning, if the bookmakers are any guide.
Labor is now $1.20 to be the next sworn-in government of South Australia, and an ever-tightening $1.40 to earn a majority.
After just four years in opposition, Labor Leader Peter Malinauskas is set to succeed Mr Marshall, consigning the Liberal leader to being a single-term premier.
Chaffey odds:
$1.02 Liberal
$11 Labor
$15 Greens, The Nationals
$51 Family First, One Nation
