1 min read

THE driver of a truck has escaped uninjured after his B-double caught on fire on the Sturt Highway at Lowbank 6kms east of Waikerie.

The man fled into a nearby field, moments before the truck burst into flames at about 2.30pm this afternoon.

The CFS said after escaping from the vehicle the driver was able to notify authorities of the fire.

It said on arrival crews found the prime mover of the the B-double truck fully alight.

Four CFS crews from Waikerie and Moorook worked to extinguish the fire, which was contained to the prime mover, although there was some damage to the front trailer as well

The CFS said an estimated $500,000 damage was caused to the truck, but quick work by its crews saved about $200,000 worth of the property and goods it was transporting.

The fire was contained to the prime mover although there was some damage to the front trailer as well.

It is understood the truck was transporting frozen vegetables.

The CFS said the cause of fire is still being determined, but it is believed to have been started by an electrical fault.

The Sturt Highway east of Waikerie was partly closed while CFS crews mopped up and the trailers were removed.

Police and SA Ambulance also attended the scene.

Police said traffic was delayed in the area for about two hours when the highway was partially closed.
