
BARMERA’S golden Greek golfer Steve Stavrou shot the lights out to win Saturday’s Monthly Medal and Privilege Cup round with a net 66 on his 10 handicap.
The event also served as the first round of qualifying for the club championship.
Stavrou finished two ahead of Matthew Morrell, who had a 75 off the stick on his seven handicap. Scoring was hot across the field. Pennant hero Tim Wood, veteran Colin Gladwin and super-veteran Gary Denton had net 70s to lower their handicaps.
Other good scores were recorded by Mohinder Ubhey (20 handicap, net 71), Steve Brown (20-72), Dougie Johns (2-73), Ady Selfe (12-73) and Berri visitor Braydon Eckermann (12-73).
Terry Fisher started his build-up to the Barmera Open next month with as return to form last Wednesday by posting 39 points. He finished two ahead of Denton and Berri’s Gary Leyson. Wine salesman Rock Paige, retired builder Eddie van Hensbergen, retired garbologist Joffa Rosbergen and Shane Smart all had 36 points.
Barmera has qualified for all three grand finals in Riverland pennants following the last minor round games against Berri on Sunday.
Tim Wood produced a stirring win on the 19th hole against Colin Hyde to give the B grade side a 3-2 win and a berth in the grand final.
The A and C grade had already qualified before the last round.
The grand finals will be played on Saturday at Loxton.
