SPORTING and other physical activities open for Riverlanders in the upcoming summer season were showcased in Loxton last weekend.
The 2025 Riverland Rec, Sport & Leisure Expo was held last Sunday, at the Precinct, in Loxton, showcasing the range of summer sporting activities available across the region.
Riverland Connected and Active Communities project officer – and organiser of the expo – Nick Dillon, said supporting the attraction, and development, of new players and volunteers was an ongoing goal.
“People love interacting with the clubs and groups… so we encouraged as many as possible to make things interactive, so people can come and try, and get a feel for what the sport is like,” Dillon said.
“There’s been plenty of groups, and plenty of kids out there having a go, so hopefully they pick up something new to try over the summer.
“Hopefully they are picking up volunteers too. There’s so many clubs and groups that people aren’t aware of, so for people to come and see them in the flesh is really valuable.”
Dillon said the 2025 expo was scheduled earlier in the year to avoid September sports finals, and provide more preparation time ahead of the summer season.
“We work with the clubs to promote it… it’s a fairly big event and it’s got a lot of moving parts,” he said.
“We wanted to give sports that play over summer that extra month to try and attract new players and volunteers.
“We’ve also funded vouchers for new participants to try a new sport… anyone who’s a new participant can use that and get $20 off their registration.
“Considering the cost of living at the moment, anything we can do to ease that burden is good as well.”
Dillon said enthusiasm shown by local sporting clubs, groups, and participants meant the expo was likely to run again in 2026.
“Looking at the crowd we’ve got today, I think there’s a big chance we go again next year,” he said.
“Can we look at bringing it to another town? I’m not sure.
“The event wouldn’t be possible without the Office of Recreation, Sport, and Racing, and the three Riverland councils. They provide great support for my role… and are doing great things out in the community as well.”
