Waikerie’s history proudly displayed

MORE of Waikerie’s history will be on full display year-round when a group of dedicated volunteers finish refurbishing the town’s old fire station.
The Waikerie Country Fire Service (CFS) restored its 1924 Garford fire truck years ago, and have begun preparations to move it to a new home.
Waikerie CFS member Bryan Jenke said the fire truck will “soon” have a permanent place of residence where visitors and locals can view it.
“Glass doors were recently installed at the old fire station (on Peake Terrace),” he said.
“It was done as part of a revamp to the building, and once finished, the truck will be on permanent display all year round.
“Currently, it is only seen once or twice a year. At the moment, it is housed at Mike Arnold’s property, where it has lived since being restored by CFS members.”
The CFS members revamping the building also plan to install solar lighting and a verandah to protect the glass doors from weather.
Mr Jenke said they hope to have the project completed by Christmas to tie in with the Christmas Tree Trail.
