Volunteers needed for transport services

A BERRI-based community service organisation is seeking volunteers for its transport services, to help locals across two regions get to and from their required destination.
Australian Red Cross offers transport services to those in need across the Riverland and Mid Murray.
The organisation has a number of vehicles to support different needs: six regular cars, a medical bus that travels to Adelaide, and a wheelchair-access vehicle.
Australian Red Cross regional co-ordinator Deb Muller encouraged locals to become volunteers.
“We’re quite low on numbers and going into our winter months, we’re really under pressure,” she said.
“We’d love to see more people sign up as either a driver or driving companion, as we seek both.
“To volunteer, people must be over the age of 21 and have had their full licence for more than two years.
“They’d need to fill out an application, be background checked and hold a ‘working with children’ check.”
Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Neil Martinson volunteers as a driver and said he enjoys being involved.
“I love doing whatever I can to help out in the community,” he said.
“I’ve met some new people and I enjoy the chit-chat we have in the cars, especially on long drives to Adelaide.
“We put some music on low and just enjoy the drive together.
“I recommend others to sign up and volunteer; it truly does help lots of people.”
