Vintage cars roll into Waikerie

MORE than 100 classic motor vehicles rolled into Waikerie this weekend as part of a car rally event.
The Riverland Vintage and Classic Car Club hosted the biennial event from Saturday, October 17, to Monday October 19, and attracted 73 entrants statewide.
Chairman of the organising committee James Copeland said the weekend was a success.
“We started off with registrations on Saturday and Sutton Ford displayed a collection of GT Falcons, Mustangs and other Ford vehicles outside, which was arranged by locals,” he said.
“That night we had a welcome dinner at the Waikerie Club and deputy mayor Trevor Norton gave a speech.
“We gave out souvenirs and fruit and the visitors loved it.
“On Sunday our car run began and it all went smoothly.”
Mr Copeland said the car run “amazed” visitors.
“We left from Waikerie and went straight to Caudo Vineyards, where we had some morning tea,” he said.
“After seeing the incredible silo art in Waikerie, the visitors couldn’t get over how beautiful the river looked from the winery.
“From there we went to Swan Reach where the entrants judged their own vehicles and then we went to the Waikerie Hotel for dinner and presentations.
“On Monday morning we had a farewell barbecue breakfast down by the river and it was a perfect ending to a great weekend.”
Mr Copeland said it was a “perfect time” to host the event.
“The region was so busy on the weekend with the Rose Festival and Wine and Food so it was great to see people that weren’t part of the rally come along and check out things like the car display at Sutton Ford,” he said.
“The weather was perfect and we can’t wait for the next event in two years’ time.”
