Toilet construction won’t be flushed away

THE District of Loxton Waikerie Council says development on Loxton’s main street public toilet will move ahead as scheduled, despite the coronavirus crisis.
An investigation and report into the adequacy of the public toilets on East Terrace in Loxton and McCoy Street in Waikerie in September last year found both facilities were not up to standard.
Minor capital works on Waikerie’s toilets were completed in February, however, as of April, council was still considering design work on the Loxton facilities.
“The money that we put aside for looking at the toilets is based on the East Terrace toilets in Loxton being due for a replacement because they’re not up to a standard we should be proud of in the modern era,” said David Beaton, District of Loxton Waikerie Council CEO.
“They’ve had some issues and in the longer term, we need to replace them, so we’re looking at trying to get a design done.”
Potential architects for the Loxton design were sought in October last year.
Mr Beaton said the council was able to find an architect in house.
“What we’ve ended up doing is we’ve put on someone that’s got a degree in architecture to be able to help us with (some projects) because there’s a number of things we’re doing at the moment,” he said.
“We’ve got the mezzanine and the new Loxton recreation complex we’re looking at, (and) there’s the design of the Waikerie river front, so there’s a range of things we’ve had to put together instead of going out to external architects.”
The council’s working group is expected to consider and accept costing proposals, along with the drafted design work in the coming months.
The current budget for the project sits at $60,000 for both the investigation and design work.
