The final voyage home

THE transportation of an historic irrigation vessel to its final resting place saw Riverlanders pack local streets last week.
Hundreds of local residents lined Renmark’s streets to witness the Argo Barge’s journey from the Big 4 Caravan Park to Olivewood Historic Homestead, where it would be turned into a static museum display, last Friday.
Renmark Paringa councillor Maria Spano said the Argo’s new location would maximise its exposure for local and visiting tourists.
“We couldn’t believe how efficient it went, it was really great,” she said.
“People were saying they drove to watch it being transported, and it was here before they even got (to Patey Drive).
“Where it was before you wondered how many people were interested, but when it was being moved you could see the interest from the community.”
Olivewood Committee chairman Ann Ryan said items recovered from the barge – including historic photos and a replica model of the vessel – remained in displayable condition.
“We’ve started our displays inside,” Ms Ryan said.
“Everything that was in the barge is currently in the main Charles Chaffey Centre getting cleaned to be put on display.
“All the history, the paperwork and pictures that were on it were still fine after being underwater.”
Ms Ryan said Olivewood committee members were eager to showcase the connections between Renmark’s irrigation history, the Chaffey brothers and the Argo Barge.
“Council still has a bit to do first,” she said.
“They will put a roof on for us and hopefully give it a quick paint.
“We take it seriously that this is a once in a lifetime thing… we have to maintain it for future generations to enjoy.”
