Tennis tournament a success

THE Riverland hosted a major junior tennis event last week, with organisers labelling it a success.
The annual State Foundation Cup was held in Berri, with 152 junior tennis players from across South Australia taking part in the four-day event.
The event saw teams from six country regions across the state take part in 10 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under and 17 and under age groups, in both team and individual events, with a strong focus on the development pathway for junior regional players.
A number of Riverlanders competed in the event as part of the River Murray team.
In the past, the individual component of the State Foundation Cup has seen players earn the right to represent Regional South Australia at the national level.
Due to the COVID pandemic, selected players will instead play in a City versus Country event in Adelaide in December.
“Tennis SA is thrilled to have been able to host the State Foundation Cup during what has continued to be a difficult year,” Dylan Hicks, Tennis SA head of tournaments and competitions said.
“It has been wonderful to bring together players from around the state, highlighting the pathway and opportunities available to all.
“Our congratulations to all of the players who have been a part of the tournament and our thanks to the Berri Tennis Club for their generous hospitality, time and efforts.”
Standout performances from Riverland pair Maria Tzanavaras and Sophie Nettle saw them selected in the 13 and under and 15 and under regional state teams respectively.
Meanwhile, Sophie Nettle and River Murray teammates Tom Nettle and Cooper Kruger won sportsmanship awards for their efforts during the week.
