Students take to STEM workshops

PRIMARY school students have “eagerly and enthusiastically” begun to engage in workshop tools and projects after being given free rein to test their skills with woodwork, craft and building.
Waikerie Lutheran Primary School (WLPS) students have been enjoying creating and experimenting with tools and creative crafts over the last few weeks as part of a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshop.
Assistant principal Michelle Burns said the STEM workshop is open for students to access during recess and lunch, with donated hammers, wood cut-offs, boxes and more for the students to work with.
“It’s very simple – we put out different supplies every week and let the students who want to have a shot at creating anything they want, or just testing out different tools,”
she said.
“We’ve seen some really creative things, like wreaths and birdhouses, coming from the students, and it’s great to see their creativity and energy come out when they’re given free rein like this.
“It’s also really helped with their social interactions; different year levels have been helping each other out, and some students who have a hard time speaking up have found it easier to offer help on other’s projects.”
Mrs Burns said the school is “always on the lookout” for any supplies or tools.
“With the popularity of the STEM shed, we want to keep things interesting for the students,” she said.
“So if anyone can donate any items or tools primary school-aged kids can use, it would be greatly appreciated.
“A special thanks to Neil Ebert for donating a table for the kids to work on in the shed.”
