Student music funding a big hit

TWO Riverland schools are singing a louder tune thanks to the injection of funding for school music programs.
Waikerie Primary School (WPS) and Renmark Primary School (RPS) received $3750 and $1440, respectively, from the State Government’s Music Innovation Fund, which aims to introduce and enhance the delivery of music in public schools and preschools by increasing exposure to music learning and improving teaching capability.
WPS music teacher Chris Mibus said the grant funding was used to buy new rhythm and beat instruments.
“With the funding, we were able to purchase a number of djembes, cajons, and bongos, which are all types of drums, and glockenspiels,” he said.
“Kids love to hit things, and beat and rhythm are some of the most important parts of music, especially when playing in a big group.
“Playing a piano or clarinet takes a lot of time and practise, but everyone can hit a drum with a bit of instruction, and as some of our instruments aged, it’s been really great to replace them with brand-new instruments.”
State Education Minister John Gardner said his government was committed to delivering “best practice” music education for children and young people.
“Music education is so important for the social, behavioural and academic development of children and young people,” he said.
“It develops thinking and learning skills and enhances wellbeing and inclusion.
“This fund is helping schools and preschools to create accessible programs, build community partnerships and develop innovation to enhance music education for all.”
Mr Mibus said music was also a “great way” of teaching young children to work together.
“A big part of music is keeping in time together, and kids will always look to the person next to them to make sure they’re doing the same thing,” he said.
“With music, it’s not cheating – it’s helping each other and getting along. The new instruments have already been a big hit – no pun intended – and it’s great to see some funding coming in for the arts.”
