St Joe’s kids get serious about bullying

THE level of maturity displayed by students of a local school in addressing the issue of bullying has impressed a Riverland art teacher.
St Joseph’s School Renmark year 6/7 art students recently produced posters inspired by anti-bullying themes and messages, to mark international Anti-Bullying Day on February 23.
Art teacher Greg Reeks said students approached the subject with a “mature and serious” attitude.
“I came up with a few different ideas and I was really keen for the kids to use that as a starting point for their own artwork,” Mr Reeks said.
“It worked really well and I was blown away a little bit.
“The year 6/7s took the posters very seriously and the message of bullying very seriously.
“I let them do their posters and they came up with some great work.”
Mr Reeks said issues surrounding bullying could start small, but then evolve to cause greater negative impacts on children.
“We talked about how it can start off with something quite minor, like getting teased about something that happens one day then can be forgotten about,” he said.
“(But) it can grow into a bit of a monster that’s out of control, so it’s very much about helping them deal with that, and if they can’t how they can get help.”
