Spotlight shone on Waikerie issues

WAIKERIE roads, redevelopment and street projects had a spotlight shone on them at a ratepayers meeting this week, when community members fired questions at local councillors.
The Waikerie and Districts Residents and Ratepayers Association (WDRRA) held its meeting on Monday night with over 30 attendees asking questions of Loxton Waikerie councillors and section 41 chairs.
WDRRA chair Trevor Quast opened the meeting at the Waikerie Football Club at 7pm, with Riverland West Chamber of Commerce chair Sonia Fowler speaking and answering questions on the group’s projects, including town stimulus vouchers and the fauna park.
Waikerie and Ramco Recreation Grounds Committee chair Frances Simes gave an update on the section 41 committee’s ideas proposed to council, including the beautification of Sturt Highway median strips near Waikerie entrances.
Waikerie Delivers Committee chair and Waikerie Football Club spokesperson Henry Crawford updated attendees on the football clubrooms’ development project, estimated at $3 million. He followed with an update on the Peake Terrace road works project, which is projected to be completed before the end of 2020.
District Council of Loxton Waikerie (DCLW) councillors Peter Walker, Clive Matthews, Jordann Kleemann and Kym Webber answered community questions largely pertaining to issues residents have experienced with turning lanes, crumbling footpaths, and overhanging trees in and around Waikerie.
The councillors urged community members to get in touch with them personally at any time to discuss issues raised and potentially take them back to council.
