Sporting clubs gather to tackle mental health

THE first of a series of mental health events, aiming to bring communities together, kicked off last month.
The Rotary Club of Loxton’s Bringing Communities Together project saw 100 people from Loxton football, netball, soccer and hockey clubs gather to hear from local mental health representatives.
Rotary Club of Loxton outgoing president Jenny Mills said the events aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere for people to talk.
“The intention of the project is to raise awareness of issues that can affect the mental health and wellbeing of people of all age groups,” she said.
“The concept of the project arose during the drought, and being mindful of the impact of the financial and emotional pressure on growers and the local business sector.”
Local doctor Peter Hamilton was a guest speaker at the event, along with Loxton’s Deb Petch and headspace Berri’s Kerril Vowles.
Resources from Beyond Blue, Black Dog Institute, headspace and Riverland Mental Health Services were available on the night, while accredited Mental Health First Training is available on a regular basis through the club.
