Special School’s SALA success

RIVERLAND Special School’s nature play area was transformed into a “woodland wonderland” recently as the school celebrated the 2020 South Australian Living Arts (SALA) festival.
The school celebrates the SALA festival annually by highlighting the creativity and talents of their students, whose artwork is on display for the community to view and purchase.
The school’s event, which took place on Friday, August 28, raised more than $600, with all funds to be used towards supporting student learning.
Teacher Trigona Pickering thanked those who made the night a success.
“We (the school) put up all the artwork up in a creative atmosphere so it was easy to see and perfect for other community members to enjoy,” she said.
“It took the students and staff two days to put up in our nature play area and we had the Renmark Paringa SES support us by providing the flood lighting for the area and assisted with packing up.”
Mrs Pickering said all the artwork was made by the students.
“The students started working on the items in term one and most either helped make something with adult support or made it themselves,” she said.
“Nearly all the pieces were available for purchase at a donation to the school – nothing was priced as it was not our focus.
“Our main focus was to celebrate the students’ creativeness and get them engaged with different ways to express themselves and they did exactly that.”
Mrs Pickering said the school enjoyed welcoming the community on their premises.
“The night was a fantastic opportunity for people to come and see the fantastic work the students do at the school,” she said.
“It was a way for the students to build relationships with the community and express themselves.”
