Skating to a new look

CONTEMPORARY indigenous art in the form of a mural now adorns a Riverland skate park, following a three-day workshop last week.
Aboriginal artist Scott Rathman visited the area to work with local young people on the Renmark Skate Park project, which focused on the First People of the Murray River and Mallee.
Mr Rathman was supported by Riverland artist Daniel Giles, who said the river played a major role in the activities.
“The biggest thing we wanted to put across… was the river,” Mr Giles told ABC Riverland.
“So that’s where all the blue comes in, because we’re in the Riverland. It’s the main source of food, water, security…for Aboriginal people back in the day, and it still is now.”
Regional agency ac.care led the school holiday project after youth worker Nicole Honey identified the mural opportunity with users of the Darnley Taylor Park facility.
The project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, and was the recipient of a Country Arts SA Step Out Grant. Renmark Paringa Council also supported the skate park project.
