Shooting club hits the target

A LOCAL shooting club is on the “up-and-up” following the installation of solar power grids and a public toilet overhaul.
The Cadell Pistol Club received $9150 in the Stronger Communities grant program, which was used to install a solar-powered system for its newly renovated toilet block, removing the need for electricity to the site.
Club member Kevin Myers said the site had previously used a generator to power the lights and flush the toilets.
“We identified a need for electricity at the club early on, and then it was a matter of finding a potential grant program to suit our request,” he said.
“Now, we’ve had a proper stand-alone solar system installed which, following the recent bathroom renovations, has really propelled the site’s draw.”
Member for Barker Tony Pasin visited the club recently, and said he was pleased to see the solar system up and running and delivering benefits for the club.
“As one of the two community clubs left in Cadell, the upgrade was really important to the 22 members of the Cadell Pistol Club, to be confident of its longevity,” he said.
“Community clubs across Barker shared in almost $150,000 during round five of the program.
“The program ensures communities across Barker have the facilities and infrastructure to continue their reputation as vibrant places to live and to visit.”
The club also recently received a Volunteers’ Grant of $4740 to upgrade fire and first-aid needs, and purchase a fridge, TV for training purposes, LED lighting and a security system.
The Cadell Pistol Club also hosted members of the Coober Pedy Pistol Club over the October long weekend, and Mr Myers said the upgrades made the site something for Cadell members to be proud of.
“We’ve struck up a good rapport with the Coober Pedy club, and hopefully when all COVID-19 restrictions lift, we’ll be able to start looking at holding proper competitions again,” he said.
“Right now, we’re thinking about holding a Christmas shoot, and looking at further grant programs that might help us install a disabled toilet block.”
The Cadell Pistol Club currently has 24 members. For more information on the club’s operations, call 0407 515 245.
