Renmark Paringa opens fence tender

COMMUNITY safety needs have outweighed public opinion for a local council beginning a project to fence a section of its river front.
Renmark Paringa Council last week opened tender processes for the fencing of the Renmark river front – a project that sparked debate among the community following its announcement – and replacement of the Renmark Swimming Pool shelter.
Renmark Paringa director corporate and community services Tim Pfeiffer said council was obligated to reduce the risk of falls between the Renmark Club and Visitor Information Centre.
“As discussed within the Council report… after working with Safework SA, it was identified that an extreme risk exists in relation to events and a high risk exists on a day-to-day basis, meaning the hazard needs to be controlled,” Mr Pfeiffer said.
Council was made aware of falling hazards at the Renmark river front by Safework SA, following the Rivafest event held earlier this year.
Mr Pfeiffer said council’s procurement policy would provide “reasonable opportunity for competitive local businesses” to apply for the fence tender.
The construction of the balustrade-style fence – intended to be similar to that seen around the Renmark Club outdoor area – is funded by the Local Government Risk Services Risk Incentive Program.
Mr Pfeiffer said upgrades of the Renmark Swimming Pool shelter were listed in council’s 2020/21 Annual Business Plan and Budget.
“Council is looking to expand and improve shelters at the site,” he said.
