New Catholic school’s name honours Christian figure

A NAME has been selected for the Riverland’s new Catholic secondary school, following an announcement in May by Catholic Education SA that the college is to be established.
The year 7 to 12 school, which is set to open in 2022 in Renmark, will be known as St Francis of Assisi College – a choice made after discussions with the local parish and school communities.
Catholic Education Diocese of Port Pirie bishop Greg O’Kelly SJ said he was “delighted” with the announcement.
“St Francis of Assisi remains an inspirational figure for people of all dominations,” he said.
“Not only was St Francis a powerful steward of the environment that is so relevant to the Riverland region, he was someone who responded with deep care to those who were vulnerable or marginalised.”
The secondary school’s location in Renmark is yet to be announced but it will cater for up to 360 students starting with year 7 and 8 in 2022.
The school will offer a new year level annually until it expands to year 7 to 12 by 2026.
Catholic Education Diocese of Port Pirie director Nichii Mardon said the name announcement of St Francis of Assisi College has been “warmly welcomed” by the community.
“St Francis of Assisi College will be a place of strong community engagement, providing an excellent Catholic education deeply steeped in faith and tradition for students across the Riverland,” she said.
“The college will have a focus on sustainability and care for self, others, and the earth, so to name the college after St Francis is fitting.”
Advertisements for a founding principal have already been issued.
The will be appointed next term and commence duties in 2021 in preparation for the opening in 2022.
Ms Mardon said the move is a “great blessing” for Riverland parents interested in securing a Catholic education for their students and is a “wonderful blessing” for the Diocese.
