Man arrested for arson attack on council bins

A MAN has been arrested accused of deliberately lighting a series of wheelie bin fires in Renmark last weekend.
A total of eight wheelie bins were burnt, including one outside the Renmark Post Office, one outside Koch’s Foodland and another at the skate park, with the damage estimated at approximately $1000.
Police patrols searched the area and found a 38-year-old man, who after being interviewed, was subsequently arrested and charged with arson.
Renmark Paringa Council Mayor Neil Martinson said the incident was “very disappointing”.
“(We are) obviously disappointed that somebody would go to that extreme of setting fire to the bin,” he said.
“But (we are) also (disappointed at) the danger it could have caused other members of the community.
“We’ve had minimal vandalism over the years, which has been fantastic and that’s a reflection on our community.”
Mr Martinson said the cost involved in replacing the damaged bins would have to be paid by ratepayers.
The 38-year-old suspect appeared before Berri Magistrates Court on May 11 and was bailed to appear in court again at the end of month.
Anyone with information on the incidents is urge to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.sa.crimestopperssa.com.au.
