Loxton’s red-hot tourism initiative

A RIVERLAND chamber of commerce has launched a new initiative to get tourists to explore lesser-known parts of the Riverland and discover some of the region’s “hidden treasures”.
The Loxton Chamber of Commerce finished installing its first ‘river red chairs’ earlier this month at eight locations in Loxton and surrounding towns.
The chamber hopes the new chairs will “reveal beautiful river views” to visitors and take them to “exciting places for great photo opportunities”.
Loxton Chamber of Commerce business and events manager Sonya Altschwager said the chamber were excited to see the outcome of the new project.
“They’re just a nice relaxing way for our visitors to take a moment and appreciate our unique local landmarks,” she said.
“This project came about through some funding from the District Council of Loxton Waikerie and we collaborated with the Loxton Men’s Shed.
“They collected old pine posts from around the region and recycled them into these gorgeous red chairs and did a fantastic job.”
Two chairs have been installed at each of the locations, which include the Loxton, Kingston-On-Murray and Moorook river fronts.
“We have Loxton Chamber of Commerce members in Kingston-On-Murray and Moorook as well, so we are trying to encourage people to head out to those places,” Ms Altschwager said.
“It’s something else for our visitors to do in town, and it gives them the chance to live like a local and they highlight some of the spots that may not be obvious to everyone.
“We put a post on our Facebook page and got some very positive comments from people around the region, and there are even inquiries from outside of Loxton from people who’d like to take part in it, so who knows what the future holds.”
Ms Altschwager said the chamber had got inspiration from a similar initiative overseas.
“We searched right over the other side of the world, and in the Canadian national parks they have red chairs, and we thought we had some pretty cool scenery as well, albeit quite different,” she said.
“The whole idea is to embrace the social media aspect.
“We want to encourage people to take photos in the chairs and to upload them to their socials with #riverredchairs so that the region can be promoted online.
“We think it will spread some really great images of our region further afield.”
Ms Altschwager thanked the Loxton Men’s Shed, District Council of Loxton Waikerie and chamber members for their support with the project.
“We do have a couple of other locations picked out if we do add anymore chairs in the future, so we encourage people to call us if they want to join in,” she said.
