Locals ready to join 2020 bash

FUNDRAISING for sick and disadvantaged children as part of a South Australian-wide group has kept a Riverlander participating in an annual event for the third year.
The 2020 Variety Bash fundraiser is set to travel through the region next week, with drivers arriving in Loxton on Wednesday night and departing from the town on Thursday morning.
Berri woman Alex Gallard – who is part of the Women in Black Team – said being able to raise awareness for children facing difficulty attracted her to participate.
“The other girls had been involved for years and I was invited to their fundraiser function,” Ms Gallard said.
“That’s exactly how I got involved, because I saw how many people were passionate, generous and unselfish.
“I just couldn’t believe how loyal these people (were), and they all do it for the same reason.
“It’s raising funds for disabled children, children in need, disadvantaged children and children with special needs. It doesn’t just help the child, it helps the family as well.”
Ms Gallard said the event – which is expected to involve approximately 300 participants – would also generate economic benefits for Riverland hospitality businesses.
“It’s enormous and it brings much-needed economic benefits to regional areas in South Australia,” she said.
“Just with the bash itself, let alone what Variety does, there’s money being spent on meals, accommodation, and there’s excitement being brought to the towns.
“They get to experience our amazing region first-hand and hopefully return one day with their family and friends.”
Ms Gallard – who is participating for the third time this year – said decorations on Variety Bash vehicles, plus costumes worn by many of the participants, were a highlight for children.
“Some people change their theme each year,” she said.
“All the cars are decorated incredibly. We love to do it and see it, but seeing the children’s faces when you drive into town and have the music playing brings so much joy.”
Ms Gallard joins 10 other Riverlanders in this year’s Variety Bash, including locals from Loxton, Renmark and Barmera.
Ms Gallard said being part of the Variety Bash illustrated what could be achieved through the “collective effort” of Riverlanders.
“This year they’re hoping the event will raise over $1 million for the children, and over the course of the drive they will present about $250,000 worth of grants throughout the state,” she said.
“Everyone involved with Variety has the same belief that it changes lives.”
Variety Bash participants will arrive in Loxton next Wednesday night and depart from the corner of East Terrace and Scenic Drive on Thursday, October 12, at 8am.
