Local Rotarians stay on their polio mission

THE Loxton Rotary Club last week held an awareness and fundraising event for the worldwide eradication of polio.
The club held its event on Loxton’s main street last Wednesday to raise funds and provide opportunities for immunisation and prevention of the disease.
Loxton Rotary Club president Jenny Mills said Rotary worldwide has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years.
“For many people these days there is little understanding of the huge impact this deadly disease and the lifelong effects of those survivors who live with the after affects,” she said.
“Rotary members worldwide have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly three billion children in 122 countries.
“Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in the decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
“Today, polio remains emdemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but it is crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free.”
