Local garden club calls out for new committee members to avoid closing

A RIVERLAND garden club is facing a potential closure in the near future unless three key committee positions are filled.
The Berri Barmera and District Garden Club was unable to form a committee at its recent annual general meeting, with the roles of president, vice president and secretary becoming vacant.
The club is now holding a special meeting on Sunday, August 16, to try and fill the positions.
Committee member Annie Berriman said the closure of the club was an “extremely sad prospect”.
“We’re really saddened by the prospect of not being able to continue,” she said.
“It’s been really enjoyable being part of the club. I’ve made a lot of friends and I’ve learnt a lot.
“Beyond being for our own enjoyment, we have also done things to help the community like helping with the garden at Bonney Lodge and rose pruning around the community.
“We are a strong club with about 45 members, but we have no one to fill those positions.
“There’s not a huge amount of commitment as there are only two committee meetings a year.
“Most of what needs to be discussed is done during our normal monthly meetings.”
The club also visits local gardens and organises trips to gardens throughout the state for inspiration.
Those interested in becoming a member can attend the special meeting at 416 Dunstone Road, Barmera, on Sunday, August 16, at 2pm.
