Local cancer survivor’s Biggest Morning Tea

A LOCAL cancer survivor will host a fundraising event next week to raise money for the Cancer Council.
Waikerie’s Maureen Howell, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, will host a Biggest Morning Tea event next Wednesday, May 26, from 10am at the Waikerie Bowling Club.
The 71-year-old said she wanted to do what she could to give back to the Cancer Council.
“When I was diagnosed, I told myself that when I’m all better the first thing I’ll do is host a Biggest Morning Tea event,” she said.
“My first event was in 2017 and it was a huge success.
“I also held events in 2018 and 2019 and both events got bigger.
“Unfortunately, last year my event had to be cancelled due to COVID, but I’m hoping this year will be a good one.”
Ms Howell said she was looking forward to the day.
“This year we’re keeping it simple because of COVID protocols,” she said.
“The event has to be capped at 100 people and people will have to sanitise and check-in, but it will still be as fun as the other years.
“My friends and I will be making the food – sandwiches, cakes and slices – and there will be a raffle and spin the wheel on the day.
“We currently have money boxes at a few places in Waikerie and I’ve been pre-selling raffle tickets.
“So far, it’s been very successful.”
Entry on the day will be $5.
