Light up the dawn this Saturday

WAIKERIE’S RSL members are asking the community “not to forget” to observe the upcoming Anzac Day, with people encouraged to lay wreaths prior to the day or stand at the end of their driveways to “light up the dawn” this Saturday.
Waikerie RSL sub-branch secretary Paul Croft said he is hoping the current crisis will not dampen local spirit.
“Waikerie usually has a strong turn-out at our Anzac Day march,” he said.
“Not only veterans, but also families of returned servicemen from previous conflicts, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
“We also have strong representation from our local schools and other community groups.
“It shows that the Anzac tradition and the memory of those who have sacrificed for our country, is strong within the community.”
The national organisation is supporting a grassroots movement to encourage all Australians to stand at the end of their driveways or on their balconies for a moment of reflection at 6am on Saturday.
RSL national president Greg Melick said the idea to unite a country in intimate reflection conducted on a mass scale came from RSL members and the public, and was driven by a groundswell of community support and social media momentum.
“The history of the Anzacs is integral to the history of Australia; the legend of our diggers is one of our nation’s enduring legacies,” he said.
“Australians have always been able to call on their Anzac spirit in times of crisis
and trouble.
“Right now, the qualities evoked by our Anzac spirit – ingenuity, humour, endurance, courage and mateship – become more important than ever.
“This Anzac Day, we have a unique opportunity to light up the dawn with our Anzac spirit, and show our service people, past and present, that we will always remember what they have done for our nation.”
Mr Croft said the Anzac tradition shows us what we can accomplish together when we put the needs of our country and community ahead of individual needs.
“We encourage everyone to take some time on Anzac Day to reflect on that tradition and to honour the memory of those who have made that sacrifice,” he said.
