Library to move for new loos?

LOXTON’S library and visitor information centre could be relocated to the town’s Institute building on East Terrace to make way for a new $685,000 public toilet.
At last month’s meeting of the District Council of Loxton Waikerie, chief executive officer David Beaton updated elected members on planning for the project, including possible locations and funding opportunities.
In response to a question from Councillor Deb Thiele, Mr Beaton said several possible locations for the new toilets were being considered, which included:
q Building the new toilets at the site of the current library/visitor information centre which would save the removal of any of the mature plane trees.
q Demolishing the current library/visitor information centre.
q Moving the library to the revamped Institute building (the current council chambers) and creating an open area plaza at the site of the new toilets to complement the surrounding area.
Mr Beaton said funding options would be presented to council during December’s ordinary meeting.
“This project would be eligible for funding under both the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and the State Government’s Local Government Infrastructure Fund,” he said.
“These applications are required by January/February 2021 with announcements probably in April/May 2021, which would allow completion in the current term of the council.
“If the funding options are all unsuccessful then council has already allocated a capital budget for the toilets.”
Designs for the new toilet were unveiled in July, and included television screens inside the blocks, plus seating and landscaping around the building.
The Institute is currently being repaired after mould and spore build-ups caused by water damage forced council to vacate the building earlier this year.
