Help The Cobweb keep its doors open

A VOLUNTEER-run Waikerie store is in strife as it reopens its doors this weekend, saying a shortage of volunteers could lead to permanent closure.
Waikerie’s The Cobweb store has been in operation for 44 years, but the current committee is concerned it may be forced to close due to a lack of volunteers.
Committee spokesperson Elaine Wilkinson said only five committee members and two volunteers currently run the shop, which reopened on Monday.
“Things are really starting to get desperate; we need more assistance in running the shop,” she said.
“We’ve put up fliers in the main street and around the town, but no one has responded.
“Of course, we were forced to close the doors because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now that’ we’ve opened up again, we’re reaching out to the community and asking for help.
“The Cobweb is a great little store that promotes locally made items, from homemade chutneys and baked goods to bric-a-brac and artwork.
“We get plenty of business, but we just need more help in the store. The working hours are very flexible and we work around what volunteers can and can’t do.”
Meanwhile, long-standing committee treasurer Mavis Kokegei was recognised for her 28 years in the role at a meeting last week.
Mrs Kokegei stepped down as committee treasurer at the committee’s annual general meeting last year.
“Mavis was really thrown into the deep end when she first stepped into the role, but she took it on with gusto and has put in so much energy and enthusiasm,” Mrs Wilkinson said.
“She decided last year that she needed a change and we just wanted to thank her for all the hard work she’s done over the years.”
