headspace adapting to COVID challenges, but demand for services on the decline

A RIVERLAND mental health service is reminding young people to look after their mental health, after a decline in the number of consultations recently.
headspace Berri manager Gemma Nickolai said demand for the service had been impacted by COVID-19.
“The demand for headspace services has remained steady over the last couple of months, but in recent weeks we have seen a decrease in referrals to headspace Berri,” she said.
“We would like to remind the community that we continue to offer in-person, telephone and online appointments.
“We have had an increase in the number of clients opting for phone and online appointments, which is understandable with the current COVID-19 restrictions, but in-person appointments are available where suitable.”
The service has also implemented hygiene and physical distancing measures to ensure the safety of both clients and staff.
Ms Nickolai said headspace Berri clients had been reporting changes to their daily habits as a result of COVID-19 that have had both positive and
negative impacts.
“Clinicians are encouraging young people to ask for help if needed, keep in contact with others and keep busy,” she said.
Ms Nickolai said the service was continuing to organise programs and initiatives to help young people maintain their mental health during isolation.
“Our Youth Reference group is still running and holding virtual meetings fortnightly. Young people interested in taking part can contact the office,” she said.
“The headspace team will be delivering online workshops in the coming weeks covering topics such as sleep, anxiety and parenting teenagers, so keep an eye on our social media for resources and updates.”
Young people looking for mental health support, or anyone helping a young person, can complete a headspace Berri referral form located on their website (www. headspace.org.au/berri/) or by calling 8582 4422.
