Go back in time

SPORTS games from yesteryear will be brought back next week as a local school celebrates a milestone.
Barmera Primary School will host its centenary sports day event next Friday, June 4, from 9am at the Barmera oval.
Teacher and centenary events co-ordinator Glenys Matthews said she looks forward to seeing the students “go back in time”.
“Before Barmera Primary moved to its new location in 1981, the school was situated on the corner of Scott Avenue and Sturt Street,” she said.
“For sports day annually, all the students would meet at the Bonney Theatre and march down Barwell Avenue – to a drum and fife band – in their houses to the town’s footy oval.
“Now, sports days are held on the school oval but to celebrate the town’s centenary we’ve decided to hold an old-fashioned sports day.
“Unfortunately, we no longer have fifes, but we have the original drum so we’ll have students beating the drum as we walk down.”
Ms Matthews said the day will be divided into three sections.
“In the first section we’ll be playing old-fashioned games like an egg-and-spoon race, sack race, three-legged race and tug-a-war to name a few,” she said.
“The second part will include tabloid events so we’ll place different activities around the oval.
“The third second will include modern-day events such as sprints and baton relays.
“We’ll finish off with a tug-a-war against the teachers and parents.
“We’re all very excited and look forward to how everything will go.”
Barmera is celebrating its centenary throughout 2021, with many events being held this year.
