Giving them pumpkin to talk about

WHILE entries were thinner on the ground then previous years, many competitors got creative with their pumpkins for the bragging rights to this year’s pumpkin competition.
The 2021 Murray River Giant Pumpkin Competition was held virtually, with growers submitting photos of their pumpkins.
Winners were announced in a Facebook livestream on Friday, April 3, with the first-place pumpkin grower taking away $250.
Event spokesperson Jason Lukacs said while the virtual competition had been “very popular”, organisers were hoping to go back to a physical, in-person competition next year,
“This year, entries were a little light on (as) the growing season this year wasn’t great again,” he said.
“We did get good entries with some good imagination.
“This year’s first place winner really used their imagination, and all the judges quite liked the entry of a ladybug pumpkin.
“We’re hoping next year to go back to having physical entries. The virtual competition has been very popular though, so we will continue with that.
“Also, a huge thanks to our major sponsors MGA Insurance Group and the Cadell Community and Tourist Association. We absolutely couldn’t hold this event without them.”
