Get ready for this year’s Loxton Mardi Gras

THIS year’s Loxton Mardi Gras event will take place a little differently, due to COVID-19 restrictions.
For the first time in 64 years, the Mardi Gras – to be held on Saturday, February 27, from 9am – will take place at the Loxton Oval instead of Loxton’s main street.
Loxton Mardi Gras publicity and events co-ordinator Chris Sheahan said the committee decided to move the event from the main street to fit with its COVID-19 management plan.
“Although the parade will be different this year, features of this location include COVID-19 safe plans, secure family lawn areas to view the parade, announcements, bands and food, and market stalls,” he said.
“The Mardi Gras is now in its 64th year and has been and still is a very popular Loxton-based family fun day.
“Its purpose is still focused to promote personal and community development amongst candidates, from 11 years old to seniors, with money raised going towards worthy community projects.”
Mr Sheahan said he hopes this year’s event will draw in many locals, as a number of events were cancelled last year due to the pandemic.
“Mardi Gras is a time for locals to come together and celebrate,” he said.
“Entry is free, there are options for being pre-registered and there will be SA Health contact tracing registers at the entry points.
“We have a limit of 3000 people at the oval at a time and the lawn is big enough to ensure people are social distancing and other COVID management conditions are in place.”
Food and market stalls co-ordinator Nola Schulz said stalls have always had to comply with current health standards so adhering to COVID-19 plans would be “easy”.
“There will be larger areas designated to the food stall with our COVID management plan,” she said.
Ms Schulz said the committee was grateful for the community’s support.
“We’ve received help from the District Council of Loxton Waikerie, the Nippy’s Gift, Loxton Show and other volunteers,” she said.
“We are still welcoming applications for float entries, food and market stalls and sponsorship.
“We’re also seeking more volunteers to help at the entry points on the day and also help us set up.
