Gallery showcasing the personal touch of souvenirs

LOCALS and visitors have been invited to take a trip down memory lane and into other countries, cities and famous landmarks through a gallery’s latest art exhibition.
The Rain Moth Gallery launched its latest exhibition, Greetings From… on Sunday, May 2, in conjunction with the SA History Festival.
Gallery chair Karen Richardson welcomed about 50 visitors to the opening and said it was a collaborative exhibition with many local residents pitching in.
“Greetings From… features displays of souvenir collections and postcards detailing each display,” she said.
“Many locals got involved and have loaned precious souvenirs that they have collected over the years – it’s a very interactive exhibit with many talking points.
“We have also set up an interactive table with games and postcards that visitors can write to their loved ones.
“There is also a Greetings From… Waikerie sign that we encourage visitors to take a picture with and post online, to promote Waikerie and the Rain Moth Gallery.
“I think everyone who visits will find something they can connect with, or that takes them on a journey down memory lane.”
ABC Riverland morning announcer Matt Stephens officially opened the exhibit, and said it held “great” snapshots in time.
“I saw many collectibles on display, including the once-popular spoons that used to be all the rage,” he said.
“SA History Month brings back great memories and snapshots in time.
“This exhibit holds memories of where people have been – tangible objects that are tied to a specific place, memory or emotion, and just seeing them can really take you back.”
Mrs Richardson said the Rain Moth Gallery was now the last gallery holding exhibitions in the Riverland.
“We really need the community’s support to stay open,” she said.
“It’s volunteer-run and relies entirely on donations and sales. You can become a member of the gallery for $20, and we currently have a raffle going on.
“The Waikerie Historical Society is holding a series of heritage walks around Waikerie during May. More information is available at the Waikerie Library, and the tour guides ask that people book their numbers in advance for COVID-19 reasons.”
Greetings From… will run at the Rain Moth Gallery until the end of May. For more information, visit the gallery’s Facebook page.
