Folk art comes to Waikerie

WAIKERIE’S Rain Moth Gallery officially launched its latest exhibition on Sunday with a large crowd in attendance, showcasing pieces from four SA artists.
From Folk Music to Fine Art opened with several pieces on display already sold, and the four exhibiting artists – Alannah Cheshire, Anne O’Dea, Susy Fagan and Sue Byham – each gave a brief talk to the crowd on the inspiration for their work.
The four artists exhibited together at the 2018 Frances Folk Gathering art exhibition, and decided to collaborate for a second exhibition in Waikerie as part of the 2020 SALA Festival.
Rain Moth Gallery chair Karen Richardson said she was “very pleased” to see a strong crowd at the launch.
“It’s great to see so many locals, artists, friends and family members supporting the gallery’s latest exhibition,” she said.
“This is probably one of the largest crowds we’ve had at a launch in some time, and we’ve already sold a couple pieces, which is promising for the exhibition’s run.”
Qualco artist Susie Skujins officially opened the exhibition, and said it was an “eclectic” collection of pieces.
“Thank you to everyone who showed up to support the gallery and artists, and especially those who intend to make a purchase,” she said.
“Artists are suffering during this COVID-19 situation, and we’ve seen this locally with the art workshops we have been running this year forced to be put on hold.
“The workshops brought artists to Waikerie to share their talents and boost art locally, and we hope that these workshops will be able to resume soon.”
The exhibition will be on show at the Rain Moth Gallery until the end of September. For more information, visit the gallery’s Facebook page.
