Find safety through community support

A RIVERLAND community group is helping women and children leaving domestic violence situations stay safe.
The Riverland Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) recently put together bags of safety items for local victims of domestic violence, which have been given to police to distribute.
Riverland NWH spokesperson Lyn Nitschke said the local domestic police unit asked the group to put together the bags as part of its community service.
“The bags are put together and funded by the Riverland NHW Group for the Riverland Domestic Violence police unit to give to victims of domestic violence to help them feel safer,” she said.
“The bags contain a personal alarm, a door alarm and a key ring alarm plus helpful information.”
NHW meetings are currently postponed due to COVID-19 but will “hopefully” resume soon.
“We are still trying to encourage people to care for your neighbours and your community, especially as many people are struggling in these trying times,” Mrs Nitschke said.
The Riverland Domestic Violence Service (RDVS) provides short-term accommodation to women and children experiencing domestic violence, as well as counselling, information, and referrals for options in housing, medical, legal, income and advocacy.
If you are experiencing domestic or family violence, contact the RDVS on 8215 6380, or 1800 800 098 after hours.
