Drunk driver halted in Renmark

LOCAL police were assisted earlier this month when a member of the public intervened to stop a drink driver in Renmark West.
Officers were called to Ral Ral Avenue around 6.30pm on Friday, May 8, after a member of the public had noticed a vehicle being driven erratically, and stopped the driver by removing the car keys.
The 69-year-old woman from Chaffey submitted to a breath test, recording a blood-alcohol reading of 0.216 – more than four times the legal limit.
Murray Mallee Superintendent James Blandford said while help from the public could be valuable, reminded locals to be wary of their own safety.
“I would just be cautious about making sure people look after their own safety first” Mr Blandford said.
“Observation and timely phone calls to the police is probably a safer and better way than actually getting physically involved.
“But sometimes you need to get involved, and the fact that people can do that safely is of main importance to us.”
The Chaffey driver was reported for drink driving and issued a 12-month instant loss of licence.
Her vehicle was impounded for 28 days, and she will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
