Drought-breaking Eagles fly high

BRENDAN LINES
It was the statistic no one wanted to bear, but after 1064 days the Cobdogla Football Club is back on the Independent’s winners list, after beating Wunkar by 20 points on Saturday.
The Eagles’ faithful breathed a collective sigh of relief at the final siren on Saturday, after having hearts in their mouths with scores deadlocked at halftime.
The dam has been ready burst on the Eagles’ drought in recent weeks, going down to reigning premiers Sedan-Cambrai in round one, then a heartbreaking three-point loss to BSR in round three.
The club has endured a series of difficult seasons, with its last win coming against BSR in round eight 2018.
Previous to that the Eagles were winless since 2014.
Cobdogla coach Nick Dillon said the win was just reward for the club.
“When we knew we had the match wrapped up, you could feel it on the bench,” he said.
“It was pretty exciting when that siren went.
“A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes, not just on the field, but off the field as well, it was a whole club effort.
“We’ve got a long way to go this season, but this was a nice reward for everyone who has done all the hard yards.
“It was good to see the Cobby Club packed with people again. It hasn’t been like that for a long time.”
