Disability access priority for Waikerie toilets

COMPREHENSIVE disability access is the highest concern as the local council looks towards upgrading a Waikerie public toilet block.
At the District Council of Loxton Waikerie (DCLW) December 2020 meeting, elected members moved to investigate and provide a priority report addressing disability compliance concerns of the McCoy Street public toilet block in Waikerie.
A concept cost estimate was provided to council at its meeting last Friday, and CEO David Beaton said the project would be slated for the next financial year.
“The public toilet block was built about 20 years ago and hasn’t been upgraded in a long time, so it’s not up to compliance standards,” he said.
“The plans council has now are in regards to fixing those disability access requirements, so the position of the doors, the ramps, et cetera.
“The cost estimate is around $172,000, which is not fixed at this stage as the project has not gone out to tender.
“Once it does, we will have more comprehensive project plan and detailing, and expect that this will likely begin reasonably early in the new financial year.”
The project cost estimate was based on demolition, building works, and site works.
Mr Beaton said the structure was sound, and a full demolition would not be necessary.
“This is not a full rebuild; rather, it’s going to be alterations and renovations to the structure that already exists,” he said.
“Council’s next steps will be an overall project feasibility study and putting the project out to tender.”
