‘Brilliant’ to be Loxton’s top citizen

LOXTON’S David Kimber was named the District Council of Loxton Waikerie’s Citizen of the Year this week.
Mr Kimber, who has been a Loxton resident since the ’70s, spent the past 50 years volunteering and participating in countless community projects including:
- Member and president of the Loxton Apex Club
- Loxton Squad Club president
- Chairman of the Loxton Branch UF&S Irrigation Board and Wine Grape Council
- Member of the Loxton Aero Club
- President of the Riverland Bowling Association
- Served as president, secretary, selector and committee member of the Loxton District Bowling Club
- Board member and assistance secretary of the Men’s Probus Club
- Loxton Landcare member
- Loxton Recreations Grounds committee member
- Loxton Men’s Shed volunteer.
In addition to serving on the committee of multiple clubs, Mr Kimber was a Loxton North Football Player until the age of 37, wrote the history of the Loxton Aero Club, was an elected member with the District Council of Loxton Waikerie and involved with the redevelopment of Loxton Rotary’s river-front walking trail.
Mr Kimber said receiving the award felt “amazing”.
“I didn’t feel humbled, I’m not a humble person, but it just felt brilliant,” he said.
“I love keeping busy, being on the go and doing things to help committees and the wider community.
“It was a satisfying and pleasant surprise when Leon rang me to tell me and it felt pretty good.”
Mr Kimber said Loxton has “been a great place” for him.
“I lived in Barmera for 10 years and it was a great place to live, but Loxton is something special,” he said.
“I moved to Darwin after living in Barmera so when I moved back to the Riverland and got a job as deputy principal at Loxton High School, it really made me appreciate the Riverland and the town.
“The German settlers have made it a very unique and can-do community and that’s why I am proud to call Loxton home.”
