Brave shavers raise funds for blood cancer

A WAIKERIE school has raised over $2000 so far in the lead-up to three volunteers making a personal sacrifice for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Waikerie Lutheran Primary School (WLPS) year 7 students Isabella and Jackson – and school principal Adam Borgas – have been raising money for the World’s Greatest Shave, and will make the shave at a special event on Friday, August 21.
Event organiser and year 7 student Natalie said the organisation “means a lot to her”.
“I’ve organised a World’s Greatest Shave event at school for the last two years – this is the third one we’ve done,” she said.
“I’ve had several relatives affected by cancer, so it means a lot to me that people want to help out either by donating or making the shave.”
First-time participant Isabella, whose hair length sits past her shoulders, said she is making the shave because she feels strongly for the cause.
“I’ve had six people in my family with cancer so I really want to show my support to them and everything they have to go through,” she said.
“I’m nervous but I’m really proud of how much we’ve raised so far and I just think it’s an important cause.”
Jackson said he is known as a “big hair buff” among friends and family and takes care in styling his hair, so making the shave was a big decision.
“Hair grows back, and the Leukaemia Foundation does a lot of great work for cancer patients,” he said.
“I’ve had three people in my family die from cancer so it means a lot to me to be able to show support and hopefully make a difference.”
The three participants are continuing to raise money until August 21.
