Berri preschool’s little green thumbs

CHILDREN at Berri Community Preschool have transformed an existing garden bed into a vegetable patch, thanks to help from a local supermarket.
Woolworths Berri presented the pre-schoolers with a $980 Woolworths Junior Landcare grant, which aims to inspire children with hands-on projects focusing on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices and enhancing native habitats.
Berri Community Preschool director Katrina Papageorgios said the children were keen to get the vegetable patch up and running.
“Our garden bed has always been in the preschool but unfortunately every year it dies off,” she said.
“This group of children had a keen interest in getting it up and running so we had used a lot of the pods Woolworths were giving out throughout the year.
“From there we applied for the grant and were successful.
“We put the money towards garden tools, gumboots and a few other things for the garden and the children were really excited.”
Mrs Papageorgios said the children enjoy watching things grow.
“We’ve spoken about the process of plants growing and it raised a lot of conversation in the kindy,” she said. “Hopefully we can get produce out of it and put it towards cooking and making things for the kindy, which also promotes healthy eating.
“We’re grateful for the grant and thank Tyler from Woolworths Berri for presenting us with the cheque.”
