Beloved Riverland flower show bows out

ONE of the Riverland’s most-loved annual events, the Waikerie Flower Show, has been cancelled for 2020, due to the obstacles posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Waikerie and Districts Community Flower Show committee “regretfully” made the decision, due to the restrictions and regulations created by the ongoing coronavirus situation.
Show committee secretary Glennis Crawford said there were a number of factors behind the decision to cancel the event.
“Factors included the maximum number of the public per room, physical distancing, separate entry and exit doors, frequent cleaning and disinfection of touch-points and record keeping of all people attending,” she said.
“The committee has been well supported by local business over the years.
“Without their support we would be unable to proceed with this event and we are very conscious of the impact that COVID-19 has had on their finances.
“We would be very reluctant in seeking financial assistance in these uncertain times.”
The committee will forge ahead with plans to hold the Waikerie Flower Show in October 2021.
“The committee is already in pre-planning phase and hoping to bring to the community another exciting and amazing event,” Mrs Crawford said.
“We look forward to the ongoing support of the community including, our local Loxton Waikerie council, local businesses and service clubs, as well as our schools, church groups and individuals.
“We would welcome anyone interested in joining our committee to bring along fresh ideas and expertise.”
The Flower Show, usually held in October, has been a feature of Waikerie’s calendar for nearly 40 years.
It began in 1980 as a fundraiser for St James Anglican Church, and was convened by the Anglican Ladies’ Guild and held in the Waikerie Institute.
After celebrating the 30th Flower Show in 2011, the baton was handed to the Waikerie and Districts Community Flower Show Committee, which had provided the opportunity for keen gardeners from children to adults to participate by exhibiting in the various categories or take part in floral art workshops and demonstrations.
