Argo safe on land

A LOCAL council’s project to relocate a historic barge continues to garner the excitement of Riverlanders.
Dozens of Renmark and Paringa residents gathered at the Patey Drive Boat Ramp last Wednesday, when the Argo Barge was brought out of the River Murray.
Renmark Paringa mayor Neil Martinson said assessment of the vessel’s condition would be undertaken before organising its transportation to Olivewood Historic Homestead.
“I don’t think there were any issues (and) it just took some time, but obviously the safety requirements of the people doing the work and the public are important,” Mr Martinson said.
“It was a really good result to get it out of the water, now the next phase is to relocate it to Olivewood.
“The Olivewood community are really looking forward to having the barge there and it will help promote the museum.”
Mr Martinson said the barge’s importance to Renmark was evident by the high level of community engagement with the project.
“There was a huge number of people out there which was really good,” he said.
“It shows they are interested in the history of the Argo and the history of Renmark.”
