Allocations already halfway there

IMPROVED inflows to Murray-Darling catchments throughout winter mean Riverland irrigators and growers have a “high likelihood” of receiving full allocations for 2021/2022.
The Department of Environment and Water (DEW) last week released an updated 54 per cent water allocation for SA Murray irrigators, improving upon the 40 per cent opening figure provided in June.
Renmark Irrigation Trust (RIT) presiding member Humphrey Howie said he was confident of reaching full allocations for the upcoming water year.
“There’s a very good chance we’ll get to our 100 per cent,” Mr Howie said.
“I’ve looked at the inflows from the Murray-Darling Basin Authority website and even though we didn’t have a lot of rain in June, the inflows are still fairly significant.
“I think that’s a good sign that the catchment is pretty well weathered up… compared to last year that is well up on the figure.”
DEW acting manager River Murray water delivery Adrienne Rumbelow said allocations would rise to 100 per cent by November even under “exceptionally dry” conditions for the next six months.
“Good rainfall has occurred across key catchment areas in the Murray-Darling Basin over the past few months and as a result, storage levels have begun to rise,” Ms Rumbelow said.
“We’ve now hit winter when most of the inflows traditionally occur, so the signs are good for (further) improvements to water allocations for the remainder of 2020-21.”
Mr Howie advised remaining aware of market mechanisms would help Riverland irrigators maximise their use of extra water resources.
“Keep your eyes open on what the market is doing and what the opportunities might be,” Mr Howie said.
“It looks like we will get 100 per cent, so hopefully water will be carried over into the following year.
“The irrigation trust is working towards an improved carryover policy for South Australians, so we don’t get caught out like (in) 2018/19.
“Follow the MDBA’s weekly reports and keep track on what’s happening throughout the basin, not just in South Australia.”
The next allocation update for Riverland irrigators and growers is set to be provided by DEW on Wednesday, July 15.
